SIDOARJO OVERVIEW


Sidoarjo is one of regency at East Java. You can get at Sidoarjo at about 20 minutes from Juanda air port.
Sidoarjo is bordered by Surabaya city and Gresik regency to the north, by Pasuruan regency to the south, by Mojokerto regency to the west and by the Madura Strait to the east. It has an area of 634.89 km², making it the smallest regency in East Java. As of 2000, Sidoarjo had a population of 1,549,883. The regency is part of the urban planning region surrounding Surabaya, known as 'Gerbangkertosusila'.
Sidoarjo that so popular with many home industries have produced many products that popular almost around the world. Bordir, Tas koper from Tanggulangin industries center, Batik kenongo have export to Malaysia, Brunei and China.
People of Sidoarjo have religious way of life, also have culture and life style difference than the others regencies at East Java. There are many specific event that always happened at Sidoarjo every year.


CULTURE AND LIFE STYLE

Ujung Dance
This kind of fight dance used to be performed with no musical instrument; however, it grew and developed so that at present it is accompanied by gamelan instrument with the songs such as: gending becek, gending okol or gending balen. The beater used to be wood from cuncung belut tree. As the tree was difficult to find, the beater is at present made of a piece of rattan. Accompanied by gamelan instrument, the fight applied dancing and elements so that it is not merely a fight. The fighters used to have magic, at present the most important thing is that the fighters can dance and are able to cope with pains. However ujung dance does not neglect its original feature, that is to beat and to be beaten. Briefly ujung fight has changed into the present ujung dance. As an outdoor dance, ujung is always performed under the sun. The interesting thing to see is that when the dancer's body is bleeding then it is just wiped out with stem of banana bunch. In one or two days. the dancer will be fine.

Bandeng (milk fish) Auction.
This annual event has become a tradition among the society of Sidoarjo. The popular name by the local people is Lelang Bandeng (milk fish auction), held on the celebration of Muhammad's birthday.

Nyadran Fiesta.
Nyadran is a sea fiesta held by the people in the. village of Balongdowo, Candi sub-district as a tradition during the full moon in the month of Ruwah (Javanese calendar). In 1994 the fiesta happened to be on 21 January. The Nyadran sea fiesta is observed by fishermen of shellfish as an expression of their gratitude to God. The fiesta is in the form of searching shellfish at sea on the straits of Madura.

Water for tourism activities in Sidoarjo is adequate enough. Having a river which passes by fish pond areas and leads to the straits of Madura, Sidoarjo offers interesting water tourism. The tour to the sea starts from the town center by canoe of motorboat.

Juanda International airport located in Sidoarjo regency has also become attraction for domestic tourists who want to see kinds of aircrafts at a short distance.

Historical site of the past Candi Pari (temple), is located in Porong sub-district.

Fishing pool, an interesting place for domestic visitors, located in Taman sub-district, on the way from Waru to Mojokerto.

Masjid Agung (the great Mosque) of Sidoarjo is on Jalan Sultan Agung, precisely on the west of the town square.
